Why Most Projects Don't Fail Because of the Technology

2 min read

According to the Standish Group CHAOS Report, only about 19 percent of all technology projects are completed on time and on budget. 66 percent fail partially or completely. Up to 71 percent of software projects fail due to unclear requirements, not a lack of competence.

This number surprises most owners and project managers. They assume a project fails because the technology was too complex, the budget too tight, or the team too weak. In practice, it looks different.

The site manager reports delays only once they can no longer be hidden. The IT department and the electrical planning team talk past each other, each using their own tools. The client asks for a status update, you email an Excel sheet that is already outdated. Approvals are delayed because nobody spoke with the authorities early enough.

These are not exceptions. This is the normal state in many technical projects, especially where multiple trades, planners, and authorities have to work together.

THREE CAUSES THAT KEEP REPEATING

Unclear requirements. Nobody defined at the start what the project actually needs. Every correction costs time and money.

Missing interfaces. Planning, trades, and clients don't speak the same language and don't use a shared structure.

Reactive control. Problems only become visible once they are already expensive, because there is no system for early oversight.

WHAT A SYSTEM DOES DIFFERENTLY

A clean project management system doesn't start with execution, it starts with analysis. Requirements, framework conditions, and technical feasibility are clarified before the first spade hits the ground. Then comes a clear project structure with a timeline, responsibilities, and defined interfaces between everyone involved. Only then does execution begin, with ongoing control instead of after the fact troubleshooting.

The difference is noticeable. You make decisions based on facts instead of assumptions. Your timeline holds because it was realistic from the start.

Project management is not a matter of luck. It is a system. Those who rely on it reach their goal faster and more safely.
